HRA exemption calculator and rent receipt generator

HRA exemption is the least of three figures: the HRA you actually receive, the rent you pay less 10 percent of basic pay, and 50 percent of basic pay in a metro such as Mumbai. It is available only under the old tax regime.

HRA exemption exists only under the old tax regime. If you are on the new regime you cannot claim it, whatever the numbers below say.
Where you rent
Mumbai counts as a metro, so the 50 percent limb applies.
Exempt from tax, a year
₹2,40,000

50% of basic pay
₹3,00,000
Your exemption is capped by the HRA your employer actually pays. Paying more rent will not increase it.
Your landlord's PAN is required. Annual rent of ₹3,00,000 is above the ₹1,00,000 threshold, so your employer will ask for it. If the landlord has no PAN, a signed declaration with their name and address is used instead.

An estimate to help you plan and produce the paperwork. It is not tax advice, and your exemption is finally a matter for your employer and your chartered accountant.

Why this one is different

Two jobs on one page, because they are the same errand. You work out what you can claim, then you need the paper to claim it, and most tools do only one of those.

The receipts are generated in your browser and printed from it. Nothing is stored, nothing is emailed, and no account is required. A rent receipt has your name, your landlord's name and their PAN on it, which is not information anybody should have to hand to a website to get a printable form.

Common questions

How is HRA exemption calculated?
As the least of three figures: the HRA actually received, the rent paid less 10 percent of basic pay plus DA, and 50 percent of that salary in a metro or 40 percent elsewhere. Whichever is smallest is your exemption.
Is Mumbai a metro for HRA?
Yes. Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai are treated as metros, so the 50 percent limb applies rather than 40 percent.
Do I need my landlord's PAN?
Once annual rent passes one lakh rupees, yes. If your landlord does not have a PAN, a signed declaration giving their name and address is used instead.
Can I claim HRA under the new tax regime?
No. The exemption is available only under the old regime, so the calculation is worth doing only if you are on it or comparing the two.
Is HRA exemption 50 percent of basic salary?
Not on its own. Fifty percent of basic pay plus DA is one of three limbs, and the exemption is the smallest of the three: that figure, the HRA actually received, and rent paid less 10 percent of basic. In a metro such as Mumbai the limb is 50 percent; elsewhere it is 40. The calculator works all three and shows which one binds.
